An Opportunity Of A Lifetime

It is a pleasure and honor to return to Mr. Raveling’s Coaching for Success website as a columnist. I just completed a successful first year, as a junior transfer student at the University of California, Berkeley after diligently studying for two years at Santa Monica College in Southern California. First and foremost my deepest condolences and prayers go out to the Santa Monica College community, faculty, students and families who were directly and indirectly affected by the violence and tragedy that happened earlier this month. Secondly, I would like to give thanks to Mr. Raveling for his continued time, mentorship and presence in my life.

I am blessed, grateful and honored to announce that I have joined the ESPN team and family this summer as an intern in the Customer Marketing and Sales department in Los Angeles County. This weekly column will capture moments and lessons learned throughout this 10 – week intensive internship program. I am hoping you will be able to take some lessons away from my experience that will be beneficial in your own personal and professional development.

I applied for this prestigious internship through UC Berkeley’s Career Center online database. However, interested student candidates can apply and acquire more information at http://www.disneyinterns.com and https://www.facebook.com/DisneyInterns. After three interviews and a marketing assignment, I was chosen for the position with ESPN’s Customer Marketing and Sales team. I believe a key to landing this competitive and amazing opportunity was the great deal of preparation I allocated to each round of interviews. I analyzed the position, did extensive research on the company, and reviewed how my experiences could be transferable to ESPN’s mission, values and culture. Lastly, I invested the time and energy anticipating and practicing possible interview questions. The interview process became an instrumental learning experience and I was able to give the ESPN team a glimpse into my passion for sports, creative potential, work ethic and willingness to learn. I am humbled by the opportunity to work with the ESPN team this summer.

As I sign off, I will leave you with a quote from author Don Miguel Ruiz. The quote reads, “Taking action is being alive. It’s taking the risk to go out and express your dream.” Until next week, continue to grow, share, and reflect while making each day a masterpiece.

Peace, Love & Positivity,
