The Power of Goals

I hope this column finds you and your loved ones blessed, in great spirits and living life to the fullest. I would like to open this column by sending my prayers out to Coach Jerry Tarkanian and his family. I am wishing you a speedy recovery Coach. I would also like to send my deepest condolences and prayers to Trayvon Martin’s family and friends.

Today’s column will define goals, describe characteristics of goals, and discuss the benefits of efficient goal setting.

So what exactly is a goal?

Goals are the ends toward which we direct our effort. They are things we want to achieve. Goals are also things we aim for as we pursue a certain course of action.

Now that we know the definition of a goal, what are some characteristics of goals that are ultimately useful and motivating to an individual’s overall performance?

Goals should be self-chosen, moderately challenging, realistic, measurable, specific, finite (has a deadline), and positive.

When developing and constructing your goals, it’s a good idea to put your aspirations in writing. This will increase the probability that you will accomplish them, and also provides a constant visible reminder. When describing your goals, avoid using words like try, think, hope, and should.

You might be asking why are goals important, and what can this information do for me?

Simply put, goals direct your attention to the task at hand. They increase and mobilize your efforts and lastly, help promote the development of new strategies when old strategies fall short.

Today, I have discussed goals, characteristics of goals, and the overall benefits of setting goals. I wish you the best of luck setting and achieving your short and long-term goals.

As I sign off from this column, I will leave you with a quote from the Buddha. The quote reads, “The secret of health for both mind and body is not to mourn for the past, worry about the future, or anticipate troubles, but to live in the present moment wisely and earnestly.”

Until next time, continue to dream, to be great, and make each day your masterpiece.
